This is not just another book of great imagery. The edgy images are beautifully illustrated with words that should be read again and again making the readers think and learn and see how their own images might start to jump. Orlando has, to use his own motto, truly shared the joy of photography through the pages of this richly expressive book. Bring on the next one, but meanwhile I’ll continue immersing myself in this one.
This book is a delight, erudite and educational. Easy to read, easy to like, and easy to look at. The photos have a textured painterly look that grabbed me immediately. The text flows playfully, prodding the pictures and holding them up and pointing things out. It feels like banter, like a visit to a gallery with a friend. I came out refreshed and enthusiastic. Forget photography and smart phones. This is the best book on design I’ve ever read.
I’ve read it cover to cover and just loved it. The images are so beautiful and cheeky and the voice you adopted in the text is playful and clever and teaches people stuff in such an accessible way.
Orlando, I have been super busy but couldn’t resist and started reading your book and so far it has been fabulous! I am so proud of you!
It is hard to put down. Your writing is engaging, clear, informative, convincing and interesting – with a real dash of fun. Your witty, creative personality shines through 🙂 You also clearly ‘know your stuff’ and this book should be made available to all photography students as a resource.
Bought this book for my 12 year old son, Oscar, who is a very keen iPhone photographer. It inspired him to shoot differently and expand his way of looking at the world around him. “I believe photography is an art of observation. It has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see the” were his comments.
Orlando’s book encompasses that beautifully and has made him more confident. Can highly recommend it to any high school student who loves photographing.
This book celebrates the art of smart phone photography and embraces the letting go of image perfection and the loving of its imperfection. It encourages the breaking of rules of classical composition and guides the reader on a journey of discovery through experimental image capture and presents new ways of seeing the world around us.
The author shares not only his technical knowledge of photography and detailed descriptions of his design thinking process through each of his illustrated images, but offers a valuable lesson in the elements and principles of art and design, and the joy to be found in capturing the unusual details of everyday life.
A thoroughly good read, providing inspiration and education in the field of art and design and smart phone photography!

Contemporary mobile photography is revolutionary – never have so many tools been available to photographers to capture life in compelling and artistic ways. You owe it to yourself to take better pictures and Luminere’s book will help.
Shooting from the Hip made me reflect on how immediate and visual our world has become. Orlando has shared a wealth of photographic knowledge in his book, however, I feel there is more to this. We are presented with ideas and images that make us see in new ways – interesting light, different angles and other perspectives. What a great metaphor for making change – the art of re-designing our lives, picking up new tools and being innovative, realising we can make it simpler and easier, learning new technology and just getting out into the world and doing it our way. Great work, Orlando! I’m inspired!
Shooting From the Hip is much more than a witty and engaging educational tool. It is a book of freedom: the freedom of expression, of simplicity, and the childlike discovery of life. It is a book of imagination, shapes, colours and joy. Thank you Orlando, and congratulations.
